Native Mats

BANIG

A "banig" is a handwoven mat usually used in East Asia and the Philippines for sleeping and sitting. This type of mat is traditionally mde in the Philippines. The mat is made of "buri" (palm), pardanus or seagrass leaves. The leaves are curled, usually dyed, then cut into strips & woven into mats, which may be plain or intricate. The Samal of Sulu usually make their mats out of buri leaves. Mats from Basey Samar use "tikog" leaves which are dyed in strong clours to make beautiful and unique designs.

Souvenirs

SOUVENIRS

One of their souvenirs or what we called "pasalubong", can be from  handicrafts made from shells and indigenous materials. Some indigenous materials are painted of the longest bridge in the Philippines named "San Juanico Bridge" which symbolizes the strong relationship of Samar and Leyte. There are also shells product used to decorate different designs or formation as their souvenirs.

Shirts

T-SHIRT

The Tacloban also offers printed shirts as one of their souvenirs. The designs of the shirts are the tourist spots in  Leyte such as McArthur Park, San Juanico Bridge, and other white sand beaches here in Leyte which majority of the tourists choose to buy printed shirts as their remembrance from Leyte.
